Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Madeleine Roux and acclaimed artist Tim Probert comes an all-new original Dungeons & Dragons middle grade series!

Welcome to Dungeon Academy, where monsters and creatures train for the dark world that awaits just beyond the dungeon walls! But Zellidora “Zelli” Stormclash is a bit—different。 She’s the one thing monsters and creatures of the Forgotten Realms fear the most: Zelli is a human

Knowing she’ll never be accepted, Zelli’s parents disguise her as a minotaur in hopes she’ll blend with the academy’s monstrous surroundings。 Zelli does her work, keeps to herself, and becomes “invisible” to everyone。

While in History of Horrible Humans class, Zelli learns of the great human adventurer, Allidora Steelstrike, who oddly resembles her。 Could Zelli also be a Steelstrike? Seeking answers to her true lineage, Zelli embarks on a dangerous adventure。

But she won’t be alone。 A vegan owlbear, a cowardly kobold, and a shapeshifting mimic will join Zelli on her quest for truth in a world that holds no place for them。 And who knows? Perhaps these monstrous misfits may discover some truths of their own 。 。 。

Get ready for humor, heart, magic, and adventure as middle graders and beyond learn to embrace who they are, accept others' differences, and discover that making mistakes is OK—as long as you learn from them。

This is a solidly cute chapter book。 I admit that when I saw the ARC I asked for it because the cover art was adorable and it was listed as a graphic novel。 It’s actually a heavily illustrated chapter book。 It would have been adorable if it had been a pure graphic novel。 It’s about a human girl left in a basket and raised by a pair of minotaur women。 She’s “disguised” as a minotaur herself, though very poorly disguised and attending a school for young monsters。 It’s a pretty wholesome story, asi This is a solidly cute chapter book。 I admit that when I saw the ARC I asked for it because the cover art was adorable and it was listed as a graphic novel。 It’s actually a heavily illustrated chapter book。 It would have been adorable if it had been a pure graphic novel。 It’s about a human girl left in a basket and raised by a pair of minotaur women。 She’s “disguised” as a minotaur herself, though very poorly disguised and attending a school for young monsters。 It’s a pretty wholesome story, aside from the child abandonment…。 about friendship and family。 It would be a fine choice for a kid of the right age who likes fantasy。 。。。more

Zelli Stormcrash has a secret, the horns and tail on her body are things she wears。 When her Minotaur mothers brought her into their family they had to disguise her as nothing is as unwelcome to monsters as a human。 Living and studying at the Dungeon Academy where monsters learn how to haunt, Zelli pretends to be a minotaur and tries to hide in the background though her urge to be heroic attracts some attention。 During Horrible Humans class she learns of dreaded human Allidora Steelstrike and ca Zelli Stormcrash has a secret, the horns and tail on her body are things she wears。 When her Minotaur mothers brought her into their family they had to disguise her as nothing is as unwelcome to monsters as a human。 Living and studying at the Dungeon Academy where monsters learn how to haunt, Zelli pretends to be a minotaur and tries to hide in the background though her urge to be heroic attracts some attention。 During Horrible Humans class she learns of dreaded human Allidora Steelstrike and can't help but notice the resemblance, could this be her birth mother? Could among humans be where she truly belongs? When she overhears students have yet to return from a task and that the famed horrid adventurer is rumoured to be nearby, Zelli decides to sneak away to find the truth。 She won't be alone though, a trio of students that don't quite fit the monster mould who think her a hero set to help the lost students are keen to assist。 What truth will Zelli find on her quest, and how will those around her react when the truth comes out? With Dungeons and Dragons being as beloved to many as it is, I was excited to see how a middlegrade novel would introduce an audience to the license。 I enjoyed that instead of a traditional adventurer story this one told that of creatures known as villains。 The main cast of characters are all wonderful, especially Hugo the vegan Owlbear with his calm and comforting presence。 Zelli and her party all follow their authentic selves which is wonderful to see celebrated。 Things that others like them saw as weaknesses were their greatest strengths leading to some sweet and funny moments。 The novel was not what I expected, sometimes feeling like a mix between early readers and middlegrade, so the pacing felt a bit off。 As someone who has never played D&D it still felt a fun introduction to the world。Dungeon Academy is story of belonging that champions authenticity that should appeal to the younger end of a middlegrade audience who enjoy fantasy adventures。 I'm sure it'll also be a hit for families who love D&D looking for fun ways to share the world with young ones in their lives。Thank you to the publisher for an early digital copy to review。 。。。more

E ARC porvided by EdelweissCute book for younger fans of Dungeons and Dragons。 Love the illustrations。 I was looking for something a bit more like Anderson's The Dungeoneers or O'Donnell's Homerooms and Hall Passes。 E ARC porvided by EdelweissCute book for younger fans of Dungeons and Dragons。 Love the illustrations。 I was looking for something a bit more like Anderson's The Dungeoneers or O'Donnell's Homerooms and Hall Passes。 。。。more
